A Common Cause of Eating Disorders

In society today, many common eating disorders may be attributed to Low self-esteem. This simply means an individuals eating habits are out of order. Someone with normal eating habits usually eat 3 regular-size or 5 small meals a day. Individuals with an eating disorder may barely eat one meal or eat an enormous amount all at once. They may think or feel a need to eat throughout the day. About 3 out of every 100 persons in the U.S. have some type of eating disorder. Many people with eating disorders are very ashamed and secretive, therefore the exact number of eating disorder cases in the U.S. is unknown. When trying to find a solution to a problem, I always like to venture back to the root of the problem .

In my opinion, eating disorders stem from low self-esteem. In a person\'s past, they may have been ridiculed for eating too much, monitored or reminded of everything they had eaten. They were called fat, ugly or some other hurtful comment that created a deep-rooted wound. As if images in television, music and magazines weren’t enough, I believe that the people that surround you may perpetuate the issue of eating disorders. If you want to be free, you must first recognize that you have a problem.

The first step to freedom is confessing your fault or faults. Then you must change your habits. You may need to seek help from a trusted friend, family member, or a local support group. Take some time to think back where it began and realize that low self-esteem has played a significant role in your eating disorder.
